It's July, and if you have just started to get serious about the exam, this is for you.It is time to start treating arithmetic like it’s a long-lost love and reading The Hindu like it's the next season of Money Heist. CAT prep has officially begun. But it is important not to go too fast, too random, and later too anxious with the syllabus. Jumping from algebra to RCs to mock tests like you are playing academic hopscotch.
If you're just starting your prep now, you're not late—you’re just on time. And the next two months? They can be foundational. Think of July and August as the “character development arc” of your CAT journey.
Because before you sprint, you’ve got to learn how to walk like a topper. And that’s exactly what we’re breaking down—month by month, move by move.
This is the starting line of your CAT journey. July is all about building your fundamentals. Now is the time to prepare yourself, slowly and systematically.
First, get the concepts clear; you need to have a solid understanding of algebra and arithmetic. Use Rodha’s concept-building resources or trusted standard books. Don’t rush, start with the basics and progress gradually. Remember, the first step is mastering the easy ones before the difficult ones.
Create a reading habit for VARC Now: Read at least 2–3 good English articles every day from The Hindu, Aeon, or CAT Daily Articles. Don’t rush, but read with the intention of the author.
Solve at least one set of DILR every day. You can start with the easy ones, and take a little tough challenge on the weekends. Also, keep a notebook. Write down everything you get wrong and every new thing you learn. That notebook will become your personal playbook.
Understand your current situation by taking a diagnostic mock test once. By the end of July, you will see that the foundation is very clear. The seeds of confidence will be planted right away.
What you started in July, it is time to take it deeper in August. This month, you will understand how time and strategy move together.
Get your hands on QA's Arithmetic completely: Make sure to thoroughly engage with QA's Arithmetic, as you can expect around 9–10 questions in the CAT to be from this section. Along with that, take up Modern Math a little bit—Set Theory, Progressions, etc.
Now solve 2–3 sets every day in DILR regularly. Not only tables or charts, but also get your hands on games, tournaments, and arrangement types. The CAT previous year paper is a very good resource in this regard.
Reading comprehension in VARC should now be 3 times a day. Focus more on inference-based RCs, as they reflect the CAT's actual pattern. Also, practice option elimination; this is the key to a good score.
Give at least 2-3 full mock tests this month. Analyze after each test where you wasted time, where you went wrong, and where there is room for improvement.
Allocate time to each section every day. Try different test strategies and analyse what works best for you. Find out for yourself which one works best for you.
August is the month of understanding; you will draw a map of your strengths and weaknesses.
