CAT mocks are useful only when they help you make better decisions under the clock. In the most recently completed CAT, 2.58 lakh candidates appeared for the exam, which shows why copying someone else's attempt target is rarely useful. Your ideal attempt count depends on your accuracy, question selection, time management, and ability to recognise which questions are worth solving.
A CAT mock attempt band is the range of questions you can attempt consistently without a major drop in accuracy or a sharp increase in wasted time. Instead of deciding that you must attempt a fixed number in every test, build this range from your own performance across several comparable mocks. This approach gives you a practical target that can change as your preparation improves.
In this guide, we explain how to build your attempt band, what to track after CAT mocks, and how to decide whether you should increase, maintain, or reduce your attempts. We will also look at how the approach differs for VARC, DILR, and QA.
An attempt is simply a question you submit for evaluation, but the number of attempts alone does not tell you whether your strategy is working. You can attempt more questions in a mock and still score lower because of rushed solving, unnecessary risks, or poor question selection. That is why your CAT mock review should look at attempts alongside accuracy, net score, time spent, and the questions you chose to leave.
In the latest completed CAT format, a correct answer carried three marks, while an incorrect MCQ resulted in a one-mark penalty. TITA questions did not have negative marking, but spending several minutes on one can still hurt your score if it prevents you from reaching easier questions later. The objective, therefore, is not to keep pushing your attempt count upward, but to find the attempt range where you can maintain a strong balance between accuracy and coverage.

When reviewing CAT mocks, look beyond the final attempt number and examine the decisions that produced it. A difficult question that you deliberately skipped after spending a few seconds assessing it may actually represent good judgment, while an easy question that you never noticed can reveal a scanning or selection issue. Your attempt band should come from several recent tests rather than your best-performing mock. Start with three to five full-length CAT mocks taken under reasonably similar conditions and review each section separately. Once you have the data, remove the mocks where your performance was clearly affected by unusual circumstances or where the test was significantly different from the others. Among the remaining attempts, identify the mocks where your accuracy stayed close to your normal level and additional attempts did not create excessive time loss. The lowest and highest qualifying attempt counts become your current working band.
Do not use your highest attempt count as the target simply because it looks impressive. If you attempted 16 questions once but accuracy dropped sharply, that number does not belong in your stable range. The goal of CAT mocks is to build repeatable decision-making, so your attempt band should reflect what you can reproduce under pressure.
Practising with previous-year questions can also help you understand what genuine CAT-level questions feel like. This is important because an unusually easy mock can make your attempt count look artificially high. Comparing your mock experience with actual previous-year questions gives you another reference point before changing your band.

The purpose is not to suggest that 12, 14, or 16 attempts are ideal for every CAT aspirant. For this learner, the strongest QA attempt band appears to be 12 to 14 attempts. Moving from 14 to 16 attempts increased the number of questions attempted, but the additional attempts also brought more wrong answers and a drop in accuracy. As a result, the learner scored 32 marks at 16 attempts, which was lower than the 34 marks achieved at 14 attempts.
The takeaway is not that 16 attempts are inherently bad. The issue is that this particular learner has not yet shown that the extra two attempts can be converted into accurate answers without affecting the overall section performance. As part of their CAT 2026 QA mock strategy, they should continue working around the 12 to 14 range while improving speed, question selection, and accuracy before testing whether a higher attempt target can consistently improve their score.
A low attempt count does not always mean that you are too slow. Sometimes you are not attempting enough because you lack the concepts required to solve the questions, while in other cases you know the concepts but fail to identify the right questions quickly. The next step should depend on which of these problems your analysis reveals.

The right attempt band is the highest repeatable range where your accuracy, net score, and time management remain under control. Attempting more questions is useful only when those additional questions are reasonably well selected and solved. If accuracy falls sharply, protecting your existing range may be the better decision.
