Previous year papers show what CAT has actually asked in past exams, while mock tests simulate what a full CAT attempt feels like today — the right approach is to use papers first to learn the exam's format and question style, then move to mocks to build timed, exam-day test-taking skill.
"Should I do previous year papers or mock tests?" is a common question, but it's built on a false choice — the two aren't competing options, they're different tools for different stages of preparation. Treating them as interchangeable is why some aspirants over-rely on old papers and freeze on genuinely new question styles, while others jump into mocks too early and get scores that don't reflect their real ability.
Previous year papers (PYPs) are the most reliable source of what CAT actually tests — real question types, real difficulty calibration, real RC passage style, straight from past official papers rather than a coaching institute's guess at what CAT might ask. Early in prep, solving PYPs untimed, section by section, is one of the fastest ways to internalise what "CAT-level" difficulty actually feels like before you start timing yourself against it.
PYPs are also useful later in prep as a lower-pressure way to revisit specific topics — if DILR sets are a weak area, going back to five years of DILR-only PYPs gives concentrated practice without the time investment of a full mock.
A PYP is a fixed, known paper — once you've solved it and seen the answers, it stops testing genuine decision-making, because you're no longer facing real uncertainty about what's coming next. A mock test simulates the unpredictability of an actual attempt: which questions to skip in DILR when a set looks unsolvable, how to manage time across three strictly locked sections, and how to stay composed when a section feels tougher than expected. This is a skill PYPs alone can't build once their content is memorised.
